BEHR® Think Outside the House Challenge 2018

This post is sponsored by BEHR®Paint.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Are you thinking outside this summer?
BEHR is having a fantastic giveaway – FOUR $500 The Home Depot® gift cards – for their Think Outside the House challenge.

I decided to take on the challenge myself, which was to use BEHR® Exterior products to complete a weekend DIY project within a budget of $1,000. We’ve been needing an outdoor dining solution for our small deck.

When space is limited, I always first think up.  This trick applies to tables too – a bar or counter-height table with stools generally takes up less space than a standard dining table with chairs or benches.

Unable to source the perfect outdoor table that won’t blow away in the wind (or blow our budget), we decided to DIY one.  For about $50 in lumber, we built this!

We love how it turned out! And with the help of BEHR MARQUEE® Exterior Paint. –

We are big fans of BEHR MARQUEE Paint – it truly is one coat coverage without a primer.  It goes on nice, and stands up well to use.

We painted our counter height outdoor table “Limousine Leather MQ5-05” in satin enamel sheen.  It is lovely!

The crisp paint is a nice contrast to our wood decking and brings out the black hardware on our deck.

We love how this table turned out and are excited to share the plans with you here.

We ended up with some scrap 2x4s leftover from this build, so I thought we’d put them to good use too.

I love the mix of wood and metal, so I opted for a stained finish for the wood base.

BEHR PREMIUM® Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish is my go-to for outdoor wood stains.  It goes on easy and holds up well.  I love the clear color – it’s almost invisible on projects, but still provides the sun and weather protection you need.

Ridiculously easy and such a hit!

I’ve also shared the plans for this beverage stand here – enjoy!

Now it’s your turn!  Tackle that exterior project, and then upload a photo for a chance to win a $500 The Home Depot® gift card from the BEHR Think Outside the House challenge.

Can’t wait to see your projects!

Outdoor Bar Table

If you are short on space but big on entertaining, try a bar or counter-height table to seat more in less space.

We have a small deck and need to seat at least five for dinner every night.  But I didn’t want a table so large it consumed our entire deck.  So I decided on a bar or counter height table for our outdoor dining space.

But I wanted something heavy and substantial, that wouldn’t blow away (or over) in the wind.  And something that didn’t cost a zillion bucks.

For about $60 in off the shelf lumber, I DIYed this –

It is sturdy.  It is heavy.  It will hold up to kids.

And it’s pretty!

Annnnnd … it was pretty easy to build!

I used off the shelf 2x lumber.  It’s douglas fir, so will hold up to elements better than pine or whitewood, but if you live in an especially humid climate, opt for cedar or whatever people use in your area for outdoor fencing, pergolas, and picnic tables.

I used a Kreg Jig for all the base joinery.  It is a miracle tool, and you will need it for this project to attach to the 4×4 legs.  It will pay for itself in this one project, and your entire neighborhood will suddenly be your best friends, once they hear you have a Kreg Jig.  Good thing you are making a two-family sized patio table.

The Kreg Jig allows me to attach the 2×4 aprons to the 4×4 legs, hiding the screws on the inside.

From there, we attached the cross bracking.  It’s just 45 degree angles, cut on our compound miter saw.

For the top, we started with the center board, attached it perfectly, and then worked outward.  Here we used 3″ self tapping deck screws.

After a light sanding, we are ready for paint!

Our go-to paint is BEHR (r) Marquee – it’s true one coat coverage and goes on smooth and easy.  It is a little more expensive, but I find you use less and don’t have to buy primer.  Pay now or pay later right?

The color is Limousine Leather by BEHR(r) Marquee.  So dramatic!

The free plans follow – do share if you build, I love seeing your projects too!

Wood Party Bucket Stand

Take your party to new heights with this DIY wood stand for a party bucket!

For BEHR(r) Think Outside the House Challenge – where you can upload a photo of your outdoor project for a chance to win $500 –

I decided to make me a new party bucket (and share the tutorial and plans with you!).

All you’ll need is a galvanized bucket (mine is the 17 gallon one – 24″ diameter, 11″ tall)

About $20 at Home Depot

And a couple of 2x4s.

I cut my 2x4s down to the right size on my compound miter saw (linked in plans below).

I used a Kreg Jig for joining.  I can’t stress enough how big a deal the Kreg Jig is – but if you aren’t ready to invest in one quite yet, you can also use 3″ self tapping deck screws for attaching.

The Kreg Jig simply predrills these holes,

Making it easy to attach everything.

Two 2x4s, twelve screws, twenty mintues.

To protect the wood from the outdoor elements, I applied a coat of BEHR (r) Premium Waterproofing Wood Finish in Clear.

I love simple projects like this that make a big impact!  Not only does the wood stand bring the party bucket up in height, but it also looks so much better.

For about $30 total (including the bucket!) you can make this party bucket with wood stand.  What a steal!

I’m posting the free plans below.  Please do share if you build, we love seeing your projects!
